A work appropriate wardrobe.

A stylish and age-appropriate wardrobe is something I struggle with. I believe the way you present yourself is a reflection of what’s happening inside. I want to feel young, vibrant, and feminine, while still being taken seriously by my colleagues.
Like many millennials in creative industries, I lead a younger team. My Gen Z team members can pull off ultra-trendy styles that closely resemble aerobic wear, and no one blinks. But put a pair of silky, draw-string wasted pants on a 30-something mom, and everyone just assumes you forgot to take off your pyjamas before coming to work.
I’m also an executive. My peers are in their sixties and wear suits each day. Most are empty-nesters with monthly disposable income that rivals my children’s total RESP savings. I need to look professional, polished, and vomit-free. All while on a budget.
If you work in a professional work environment, or are dressing for the job you want, here are a few of my favourite work wardrobe staples this Spring:
The V-neck blouse:
These are on-trend, professional, and extremely affordable. H&M offers these in 5 different colours, and they’re comfortable. They don’t wrinkle, transition easily from Winter to Spring, and aren’t so trendy that you’ll be donating them by the Fall. Zara and Banana Republic also offer similar options at a slightly higher price point.
High-wasted trouser:
I’m really more of a dress-lover, but a good trouser is giving me all the feels this season. Here are a few of my favourite:
A bold jacket:
While a timeless blazer is a wardrobe staple, this season I’m shopping for something bold, fun, and memorable.
A midi-skirt:
The midi-length skirt has been my favourite now for several years. The length is flattering, professional, and can be worn easily with boots (read: you don’t have to shave your legs for months on end).
A body-suit:
Yes, I realize this doesn’t sound like workwear. But I promise you this is an excellent (and affordable) transition piece to wear with your favourite skirt or trouser. Warning: this is not nursing or pumping friendly. You don’t want to be caught unsnapping the crotch of your outfit as often as I have. Take my word for it.
